Car insurance for Europe 'needs attention'
Published: 03/09/2007
People thinking of taking caravanning holidays abroad needn't be put off by insurance worries - but those planning a trip to Europe in their car should be more concerned, according to a leading industry body.
The British Insurers Broker's Association (BIBA) is a general insurance organisation which represents the interests of insurance brokers, intermediaries and customers. It says that caravan insurance normally comes with international cover as standard.
"Caravan insurance itself, which tends to pick up the damage of the caravan and its contents would usually cover Europe as part of the geographical limits," a BIBA spokesperson said.
"[Travelling abroad] is not normally too much of an issue."
But general car insurance is more of a concern, the spokesperson said.
"Customers need to check their motor insurance to ensure they do have cover abroad."
The spokesperson went on to say that the most difficult part of learning how to drive a caravan was reversing, stating that "anyone thinking of buying a caravan for the first time should go on some kind of training course to enable them to do this safely".
