Cat owners 'should take out protection'
Published: 31/08/2007
Cat owners should take out insurance for their moggy regardless of its age, one pet expert has said.
Maggie Roberts, head of veterinary services at Cats Protection, says that taking in a pet for veterinary surgery is "upsetting enough without the added burden" of having to pay for it.
Cat Protection is the UK's leading cat welfare charity.
"Cats Protection would recommend owners take out pet insurance for their cats, regardless of the cats age," she commented.
"Even the most well looked-after cats can develop unexpected illnesses or be involved in accidents. Veterinary bills soon mount up when major surgery, hospitalisation or even referral to a specialist is necessary," Ms Roberts added.
"Having a much-loved pet undergoing veterinary treatment can be upsetting enough without the added burden of worrying how to pay for the cost of treatment."
A recent report from financial services consultancy Defaqto revealed that 17 per cent of cats and 32 per cent of dogs are uninsured.
