Younger drivers should take 'a year of lessons'

Car Insurance News - Published: 29/08/2007
Young drivers should be forced to gain a greater level of experience on the UK's roads than they currently do before being allowed to take to the wheel alone, one expert has claimed.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, says that the UK could benefit from introducing initiatives already in use in other European countries.

"We suggest a minimum of one year pre-test driving experience before you get to the stage of taking your test, which would in effect raise the driving age, as it is in many European countries," Mr Tarling commented.

"The key thing is to ensure that young drivers, once they have passed their tests, are better equipped to be in control of a potentially lethal weapon.

He went to identify Sweden as a country with a strong set of regulations when it comes to new drivers.

"After a years driving experience, you can take your test [in Sweden] and they will then limit the number of passengers they can have," he explained.
