Biometric product released for car protection
Published: 29/08/2007
A new gadget - which promises to offer a high-tech solution for vehicle owners worried about losing their keys - has just been released.
The new device has been developed by Automotive Technology Research and Development (ATRD). It constitutes a biometric immobiliser which sits on the dashboard of your car and can only be initiated by a scan of a fingerprint.
"The biometric immobiliser is activated by a fingerprint, so even if someone does acquire keys they are useless," a spokesperson for ARTD told local paper Stourbridge News.
"When the owner, or approved driver gets into the vehicle they place their finger to the touchpad and their print is scanned.
"As soon as it is recognised, they can start the car, if it isn't it remains immobilised."
The system can store up to ten fingerprints and is available for around £350 to £400. Around 50 per cent of current vehicle thefts involve a thief stealing a set of keys before making off with your vehicle, ATRD claims.
