Carelessness 'will cost you', say police

Car Insurance News - Published: 24/08/2007
Carelessness will cost motorists much more than they think, Yeovil's local police force has warned.

It says that a forgetting to take adequate care of belongings and neglecting to hide expensive kit inside cars could end up costing motorists not only their valuables, but also repair costs, insurance excesses and increased insurance premiums.

"Thieves are causing a lot of damage to these vehicles by smashing windows or forcing doors. They're taking satellite navigation systems, handbags, laptop computers, mobile phones, cd players, car stereos and even cash," neighbourhood inspector Mike Edwards explained.

"The message to motorists is really simple - don't turn your car into a shop window for thieves by leaving anything on display. Ideally take valuable items into the house, and if that's not possible, make sure they can't be seen. Bear in mind that under the seat and in the glove box are the first places a thief will look."

Mr Edwards went on to explain that vans are particularly high-risk targets - and he added that van-owners should try and remove any valuable equipment from their vehicles when at all possible.
