Motorists would pay for points

Car Insurance News - Published: 22/08/2007
Around ten per cent of UK motorists would pay someone to takeaway the points on their license, if it meant that they could avoid paying more for their car insurance, a new report claims.

A similar proportion would also shell out to have someone take on their points if it meant they could avoid losing their license, the study from comparison site confused.com states.

Its research states that a driver with three points will see their insurance premium rise by seven per cent on average. If they have six points, their premium will go up by 25 per cent on average - while if they have nine points on their license it will jump by 50 per cent.

Although 4.1 million motorists say that they would pay someone else to take on their points for them, they might be hard pushed to find someone willing to receive cash in exchange for licence penalty points - as 96 per cent of those surveyed said they would not participate in such a scheme.

"Speed cameras don't always capture an accurate picture of the person driving. Shadows or sunlight reflecting off the glass can obscure a person's face resulting in a lucrative black market for point swappers." Debra Williams, managing director at Confused.com, said.

"However, this is a dangerous lottery to play. The consequences of selling or buying points could be a criminal record and a spell at 'Her Majesty's pleasure'. Our advice is to ease off the gas, drive more responsibly and avoid the ultimate penalty."
