Ryanair pushes for risk-assessed travel insurance
Industry Insurance News - Published: 21/08/2007
Ryanair has contacted the Association of British Insurers (ABI), requesting that it looks into the introduction of risk-assessed travel insurance policies based on airlines' performances.
The Irish budget airline says that the insurance industry should offer cheaper premiums for people travelling with more reliable carriers.
New statistics released this week show that the number of claims for lost baggage went up by between 40 per cent and 80 per cent over the first half of this year. But the number of items of baggage lost by Ryanair dropped from 0.5 per thousand to 0.4 per thousand over the first six months of 2007.
In contrast, figures showed that the number of bags lost by British Airways shot up from 21 per 1,000 last year to 28 per 1,000 this year.
"For years, the car insurance industry has provided discounts for low risk categories such as women drivers and the over thirties. The time has now come for passengers flying with airlines that deliver the best customer service to enjoy the same discounts," Ryanair's Peter Sherrard commented.
"Ryanair calls on the insurance industry to take a new look at travel insurance. The statistics prove that airlines are far from equal, yet insurers do not differentiate. Not only does Ryanair offer the lowest fares. It also delivers the most punctual flights, the fewest delays and the lowest number of cancellations."
