Uninsured drivers 'should be fined more'
Car Insurance News - Published: 17/08/2007
Uninsured drivers should face steeper fines, according to the Liberal Democrats.
The political party recently carried out research into fines for motorists who don't have insurance on their vehicles.
It revealed that the average fine issued for such an offence has fallen by 25 per cent to £169 - which is less than half the average annual cost of motor insurance itself.
This comes despite the fact that just one in five drivers, taking to the roads without insurance, is caught. The government estimates that 2.1 million motorists are driving without insurance in the UK.
"By fining offenders significantly less than the cost of insurance, the Government are hardly sending out the right message to uninsured drivers," Liberal Democrat shadow transport secretary, Susan Kramer MP, said.
"Much more needs to be done to catch and prosecute uninsured drivers, whose actions cost law-abiding drivers thousands of pounds a year.
"These figures are bad news for law-abiding motorists. Unless the Government can reverse this trend all drivers will pay the price."
