Flooding hits Northern Ireland

- Published: 13/08/2007
Up to 20 homes in Northern Ireland have been evacuated after the most recent spate of flooding to hit the UK.

The homes in the counties of Armagh, Down and Antrim were swamped with flood waters, which rose as high as five feet in some areas. The country's Fire and Rescue Service was on full alert, with crews bringing in pumping equipment to dry out ground floor residences.

Some residents say that flooding is now happening so regularly that it has become impossible to get insurance.

"The thing is, every time it rains everyone has to sit and look out the window and watch it and there`s nothing we can do about it," one local, Kevin Foxwell, told UTV.

"Sandbags are all very well but if the water goes above the sandbag level it is into the house.

"This is about the sixth time this place has been flooded.

"We need the problem fixed, and we need the problem fixed sooner rather than later."
