Parking habits more important than postcode

- Published: 01/08/2007
Insurers are more likely to be interested in where you park your car overnight than the area in which you live when deciding premiums, it has been claimed.

Liz Kennett, a spokesperson from breakdown recovery service the RAC, says that how park your car is a major determinate of how much you pay in terms of insurance - although she does add that your postcode also has some influence.

"Car insurance firms will look at where your car is parked over night," Ms Kennett commented.

"If your car is parked in the garage then you will pay less than someone whose car is parked on the street. You're less likely to get your car stolen and it's less likely to be damaged.

"They do look at where your car is parked over night and obviously that will be impacted by your post code, because some post codes will be worse for theft than others," she went on.

Ms Kennett also said that cars were becoming much harder to steal, meaning that thieves are increasingly concentrating on the possessions contained within them rather than the actual car itself.
