Urban areas produce highest losses

- Published: 02/07/2007
Urban areas with lots of insured properties will be the regions that see the highest number of home insurance claims following recent flooding, a leading industry body has said.

Risk management consultancy firm Ambiental yesterday said that, from an insurance perspective, the biggest areas of concern will be flooded urban areas, such as those found in Sheffield, Leeds and Hull.

The company adds that it is still collecting data on the number of insured buildings affected - and says that the effect of the floods on the insurance industry will depend "on the extent and severity of flooding".

"It really depends on where the flooding happened and the density of houses that were affected," he continued.

"They're going to be most concerned in those urban areas where the highest concentration of insured properties is.

"Sheffield centre, Hull, Leeds … these are urban areas where you've got both residential and commercial insured property that are likely to generate the highest insured losses."
