Homeowners should 'keep flood records'

- Published: 29/06/2007
Homeowners whose property has been afflicted by flooding should keep a record of the specific details of the damage, an industry expert claims.

Justin Butler is managing director at environmental engineering and risk management consultancy Ambiental. He says that taking photos of your home and keeping records of any items which have been ruined by flooding will be "useful for insurance companies" when making claims.

"It's helpful to record - using photographs, for example - how deep the flood water ingressed into your property," Mr Butler said.

"Also note where it came from - are you near a river, or did it come from another source? Rising ground, for instance, or up through the basement, which is particularly prevalent over aquifer areas," he continued.

He added that homeowners should make sure that they detail where the flooding originated from, how deep the water came and "how rapidly the flood event was" - as all this information would be very useful for insurance companies.
