Tech firms urged to help deter criminals

- Published: 21/06/2007
Home secretary John Reid urged manufacturers of the next generation of mobile phones to have security as a high priority.

In a speech was in front of an audience of US business leaders in New York he called for design and technology in new mobile phones to be geared increasingly to the safety of their users.

Mr Reid held the car industry as an example to be followed, referencing the substantial drop of over 50 per cent in car robberies since 1997, a result mainly of manufacturers adding new safety features to their designs.

The home secretary also mentioned the imminent launch of the iPhone, the new product from Apple that has received an unprecedented amount of publicity.

Next generation mobile phones should avoid being tempting to potential thieves, without sacrificing their appeal to the consumer, added Mr Reid.

The Home Office has already started a dialogue with manufacturers and suppliers on the issue, all having met a month ago to address the different safety possibilities in future designs of mobile phones. ADNFCR-1058-ID-18188094-ADNFCR
